Rescues have until June 14 at 10 a.m. to find foster homes for about 14 cats rescued from a Farmington home.

If they have not found foster homes by that deadline, the Animal Humane Society will continue to reach out to rescue groups in Minnesota and Wisconsin to try and place the cats.

If the cats have still not found foster homes after that, there is a possibility they would be euthanized.

"We try to avoid it, but if there's a situation where there is no possibility of rescue then we might have to consider it," Animal Humane Society Public Relations Strategist Mary Tan said. "We try to place any adoptable animal that would make a great pet."

Tan added that the society has a 97 percent placement rate and only a 3 percent euthanasia rate for rescued animals.

A 25-year-old Farmington woman was arrested and released from custody last week after a search of her rental home where she operated the Minnesota Animal Rescue found more than 60 dead cats and more than 40 other neglected animals, according to the Pioneer Press.

The society rescued 129 animals from the house, Tan said. Of those, almost all of them have been adopted but the 14 cats. Minnesota Animal Rescue had received animals from the humane society.

"When we gave her cats, she was fully vetted," Tan said. "She proved to us that she had the resources to take care of these animals."

One of the cats had found placement but 14 would still need to be fostered or rescued. About eight of the cats have feline leukemia virus and all of them deal with a variety of health ailments including giardia, mites, worms and more. The humane society is working to treat and rehabilitate the cats.

The remaining cats are Wolfgang, Peanut, Simone, Gemma, Dessi, Ragamuffin, Willma, Tara, Jax, Dottie, June, Jerry, Froggy and Sparkles. The cats vary in age and coloring.

The society is looking for foster homes because staff believes the cats would do better in that type of situation, Tan said.
