It was a windy day in the Peruvian mountains.
After having said goodbye to contestant Lauren Burnham, bachelor Arie Luyendyk waits patiently as Prior Lake's Becca Kufrin steps down the walkway in a black-and-white gown, hair swept to the side.
This was the scene for the season finale of "The Bachelor," which aired on Monday at 7 p.m. Throughout the season, 29 women competed for the love of and engagement to Luyendyk, a realtor and race car driver.
But now, after the departure of Burnham, there is only Kufrin and Luyendyk. And some strategically-placed llamas.
Luyendyk gets down on one knee, offering a sparkling Neil Lane engagement ring and the final rose to Kufrin.
"I choose you today and I choose you every day from here on out," Luyendyk tells her.
But he didn't.
In love with two women
After getting grilled by the families of the top four during visits to the women's hometowns, it's Burnham's and Kufrin's turn to meet the Luyendyk family in the finale episode of the show.
Even at this point, Luyendyk seems unsure of his decision and makes this clear by constantly talking about his indecision in his interviews.
"I don't want to make the wrong decision," Luyendyk said. "I thought I would have some clarity. It's very tough."
Following Burnham's visit, Luyendyk's entire family is introduced to Kufrin. They welcome her by mentioning Burnham as much as possible to Kufrin and talking about how they're dating the same man as if Kufrin doesn't know.
"I don't want to be compared to her in any way because she is a huge threat to me," Kufrin said. "His whole family brought up that they met Lauren yesterday. ... It makes me want to puke thinking about them together. I hate talking about Lauren."
Following the encounters, Luyendyk talks to his family about who they might think is best for him. His mother says that it's tough to decide, because she loves both girls.
It must run in the family.
Ultimately, most of the family agrees that while they do like Burnham, they feel that Kufrin would be a better match for Luyendyk.
"I definitely see a life with both of them," Luyendyk said. "I had this idea of like, I would get to this point and I would totally know."
For their final dates, Luyendyk takes Burnham to Machu Picchu and they kiss in the clouds of the high mountains. Luyendyk insists that he's in love with Burnham because he noticed she has a "speckle" in her left eye.
For Kufrin's date, they walk around a little. Later in the evening, Kufrin gives Luyendyk a scrapbook of their time together, compiled over the last two months. Luyendyk, par for the course, loves that.
"I know that he loves me," Kufrin said. "But I just wanted to show him how much I care about him and how much he means to me."
Up until the day of, Luyendyk maintains that he is in love with both women and is having a difficult time deciding between the two. Through some miracle, his mind is made up when he wakes up on proposal day.
"I can finally realize who I see growing old with," Luyendyk said. "It feels so good to have that clarity. I couldn't have pictured a better woman for me."
Burnham exits the limo and pours her heart out to Luyendyk, likely sure that he would get down on one knee after the multiple "I love you" exchanges.
"I didn't know fully until this morning," Luyendyk tells Burnham. "I was in love with her and I was in love with you. I'm sorry to put you through this."
'Don't touch me'
As she rides away in the limo, Burnham speaks with the voice of millions of "Bachelor" fans watching the finale: "How could you get down on one knee if you weren't sure until three hours ago?"
Which brings us back to an earlier scene. Luyendyk promises to choose Kufrin every single day. He asks her to marry him. She says yes.
In a moment of foreboding, the final rose snaps in half and falls to the ground as Luyendyk embraces Kufrin. Whereas a normal season would end and the happy couple would take the stage for the live "After The Final Rose" show, instead we are greeted with host Chris Harrison telling us that the story isn't over.
"I go to bed and I think about Lauren and I wake up and I think about Lauren," Luyendyk said. "(Kufrin) knows that I think about Lauren. I told Becca I would choose her every day and I know I made that commitment and it kills me that I'm going back on that, but I have to follow my heart."
Before heading to break it off with his then-fiancé, Luyendyk tells Harrison that he wants to pursue Burnham instead. In between these interviews, we see Kufrin excited and ready to spend a relaxing weekend in Los Angeles with Luyendyk.
"I feel like I can relax," Kufrin said. "I'm so excited. I just want to get to the point where the show is done and we can get to our lives together."
Luyendyk sits down with Kufrin on a couch and tells her that "the more I hang out with you the more I felt like I was maybe losing the possibility of reconciling things with Lauren."
Kufrin is floored.
"Do you want to be back with her?" Kufrin asks. "Are you f-----g kidding me?"
Like rubbing salt into an open, festering wound, Luyendyk goes on about how his heart is with Burnham and that the heartbreak of sending her away has not left him during the entirety of the time he's spent with Kufrin and that he's been half-in with Kufrin the whole time.
"Are you going to be half-in with her?" Kufrin asks Luyendyk.
"No," Luyendyk said.
Dear Luyendyk: You're the worst. Sincerely, Prior Lake.
Sometime during the conversation, Kufrin slips the engagement ring off of her finger.
"You were conflicted, but then you should have thought about if you were ready to get engaged," Kufrin said. "And you weren't."
Though Luyendyk said he had expressed his doubts with Kufrin, he said he didn't let her know to the extent he should have. Kufrin responds with: "Well, clearly."
Declaring that she's "done," Kufrin begins to pack up her bag and get ready to head out the door before Luyendyk tells her that he'll leave. But, he hesitates.
"I'm not going to like, hug you goodbye," Kufrin said. "This is just like a really s---t thing on your part. Everything about this. I want you to go."
Luyendyk leaves, just long enough for Kufrin to believe she is alone and break down into tears. Then, he heads back inside.
"What are you still doing here?" Kufrin said. "I have nothing to say. It's so f-----g embarrassing. You think you have this future. Don't touch me. ... It feels like my future was ripped away."
Kufrin asks him to leave several more times before he actually does.
"I can't even look at you," Kufrin said.
Kufrin was brought out to address the audience at the last few minutes of the "After The Final Rose" episode to talk about how she has been doing since the January breakup.
"I feel like I was lied to for so long," Kufrin said. "I have questions. But at this point, it's like 'will anything I ask him get a true answer?'"
In an interview with People magazine, Kufrin said she was robbed of a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
"He did get down on one knee, he did propose to me, he did say, 'I'm committing to you, I choose you ever day,'" Kufrin said. "That's something that I only wanted to happen once in my life and it's been robbed from me, and I can never have that one time moment again."
Kufrin, Luyendyk and Burnham will return for another two-hour "After The Final Rose" on Tuesday starting at 7 p.m.
It's not all bad — people are sending money Kufrin's way on Venmo for drinks and based on the number of people doing it, she'll be able to buy a lot of wine. Like, a lot of wine.
